Uneven Skin Tone Treatment in Singapore

Uneven skin tone is a common skin condition that can happen anywhere on the body, but is more noticeable when it happens on the face. For many individuals, it may also be a cosmetic concern that affects self-confidence.

The good news is, there are various uneven skin tone treatments that can be recommended to address uneven skin tone issues based on the type and cause of your specific condition.

What is Uneven Skin Tone?

Uneven skin tone, also known as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, is a common skin condition where patches of skin are darker or lighter than the surrounding area.

Individuals with uneven skin tone may have dark spots, pigmentation patches, or discolouration all over the face. You may also notice dry, scaly, or rough texture.

Causes of Uneven Skin Tone

Uneven skin tone can occur due to a number of external and genetic factors.
The most common causes are:

  1. Excessive Sun Exposure

The skin naturally produces melanin to protect itself from harmful UV rays. When your skin is repeatedly exposed to UV rays, sun damage may occur. As a result, brown spots or dark spots, known as sunspots or solar lentigines, along with uneven skin tone may develop due to excess melanin production.

  2. Hormonal Changes

Uneven skin tone can also happen due to hormone stimulation. This is often experienced by women during pregnancy, menopause, or while taking hormonal contraceptives. The fluctuation of hormones like oestrogen and progesterone causes increased melanin production, resulting in hormonal pigmentation or melasma.

  3. Pollution

Air pollution exposes the skin to harmful gases and particles which may penetrate the skin, increasing oxidative stress. These pollutants may damage the skin barrier and contribute to dull, uneven skin tone and premature ageing.

  4. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Skin inflammation caused by acne, eczema, psoriasis, or irritation from unsuitable products can leave behind red marks or blemishes known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). These blemishes may cause uneven skin tone that takes a long time to fade.

  5. Genetics

For some individuals, the tendency to experience uneven skin tone may be genetically determined. As we age and collagen production slows down, the rate at which skin cells heal and renew also slows. Subsequently, dark spots and blemishes may not fade as easily, leading to persistent uneven skin tone.

Types of Uneven Skin Tone

In general, uneven skin tone can be classified as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, mixed, and generalised pigmentation. Here are the differences between them:

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which some parts of the skin are darker than the surrounding areas due to an excess production of melanin. Common types include:

  • Age spots: Small, dark patches caused by prolonged sun exposure
  • Melasma: Brown or grey-brown patches triggered by hormonal changes
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark spots that develop after an injury or inflammation
  • Freckles: Small brown spots that become more visible with sun exposure, more common in individuals with lighter skin tones

Hypopigmentation

With hypopigmentation, some parts of the skin are lighter than the surrounding areas due to reduced melanin production. Some forms of hypopigmentation include:

  • Vitiligo: A condition where the immune system attacks melanocytes, leading to the formation of white patches
  • Albinism: A genetic condition resulting in very light skin, hair, and eyes
  • Post-Inflammatory Hypopigmentation (PIH): Light patches that appear after an injury or inflammation
  • Pityriasis Alba: Light patches associated with dry, scaly skin, more common in younger individuals

Mixed Pigmentation

Sometimes, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation can occur in the same individual, leading to an uneven appearance. This may be caused by chronic sun exposure and certain skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Generalised Pigmentation

Generalised pigmentation refers to changes in skin tone that affect larger areas or the entire body, rather than just the face. This may happen due to some hormonal conditions such as Addison’s disease or genetic factors.

Uneven Skin Tone Treatments

Uneven skin tone treatment typically involves a combination of lifestyle changes, topical skincare, and professional medical aesthetic procedures. In Singapore, there are various treatments available in medical aesthetic clinics to improve uneven skin tone. Depending on your skin condition, our doctors may recommend:

Hydrabeauty Treatment

Hydrabeauty Facial

Hydrabeauty facial is a professional facial treatment that delivers active ingredients into the skin to support skin health. It includes deep cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and serum infusion, helping restore skin radiance and clarity.

Titanium lifting

Titanium Lifting

Titanium lifting is a non-invasive laser treatment that uses triple-wavelength technology to target multiple skin layers. It may help improve dull skin, enhance glow, and reduce pigmentation.

Pico Hybrid Laser

PICO hybrid laser treatment can help address uneven skin tone and pigmentation while supporting collagen production for improved texture and brightness.

It may be recommended for melasma, PIH, freckles, sun spots, and age spots.

skinboosters treatment for fine lines and wrinkles

Skin Booster Injections

Skin booster injections deliver hydrating and skin-repairing ingredients into the skin using micro-needles. Ingredients may include hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants, or polynucleotides, supporting collagen production and skin renewal.

microneedling rf treatment

Microneedling Radiofrequency

Microneedling radiofrequency combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production in deeper skin layers, which may gradually improve skin tone and texture.

FAQ

Uneven skin tone may be improved with regular exfoliation, a balanced diet, and consistent sun protection. However, professional consultation is recommended if pigmentation persists.

PICO laser uses ultra-short pulses to break down excess melanin into smaller particles that the body can clear naturally. It is commonly recommended for melasma, sun spots, and PIH, though results vary by individual.

Improvements are typically seen within a few weeks to a few months, depending on treatment type and skin condition.

Most treatments have minimal downtime. Mild redness may occur after PICO laser, titanium lifting, or skin booster injections and usually subsides within 1–3 hours.

Uneven skin tone can be significantly improved, but recurrence may occur if underlying causes such as genetics or sun exposure are not managed. Ongoing maintenance and sun protection are essential.
